Banana business

Everybody had this problem!

Too many green bananas you can’t eat

OR

Too many mushy-ripe bananas you don’t want to eat

In South Korea a grocery store decided to package bananas at different levels of ripeness so that their shoppers get a ripe banana every day while wasting none.

So simple, so refreshingly novel.

Creative ideas, even simple ones, can make a big difference.

Someone somewhere in South Korea started thinking.

(Note that thinking, in and of itself, makes you stand out from the pack!)

That someone was thinking differently.

And that someone decided to do something that’s different.

Remember Apple’s slogan, Think Differently, and this line from Steve Jobs?

Here's to the crazy ones — the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently — they're not fond of rules.

Someone, in other words, was “crazy” enough to re-package bananas in a different way — and that made all the difference.

It’s cool. It’s novel. It’s better.

And yet so simple. (No R&D, no science, no nothing!)

Business problem

Creativity is the novel path to the future.

We value creative thinking; we prize novelty.

Markets respond with a Pavlovian Wow to creative products and services.

It’s why Frida Kahlo became such a star!

Businesses obsess over creativity and originality (as they shold!)

While ‘Best Practices’ are code name for herd behavior, Novel Practices are the way to go for companies that want to win the market.

It’s why businesses are constantly looking for ways to unleash creativity (but encouraging people to “think outside the box” doesn’t get them far).

Business solution

When you peel off all the “best practices for how to get more creativity”, it all comes down to one and only one factor: the right people!

You need the right people:

  • who think differently

  • who think creatively

  • who look at something and see opportunity

  • who aren’t afraid to be unconventional

  • who aren’t paralyzed by group think

Once you get on board with this line of thinking, you’ll be miles ahead of everyone else.

But don’t stop there, start making it happen.

Spot the right people among your current and future talents, and you’ll get creative energy flowing and energizing your people, products, customers, and business.
