Tips for Success from an Unexpected Place
There’s a reason for the picture; read on.
David, the masterpiece Renaissance sculpture created in Carrara marble by Michelangelo in the early 1500’s, is on display at the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, Italy.
David
Probably the most admired and studied sculpture in art history.
The marble statue of the Biblical figure of David is over 5 meters high (17 ft).
A lot has been written about David, even how often it gets cleaned — and how that special task is accomplished.
The Michelangelo Effect
Michelangelo, the 26 years-old artist who won the commission to create the sculpture for the Florence Cathedral, believed that David was hidden in the large block of marble he had in front of him.
Michelangelo believed his role was to expose and reveal that hidden figure — in all its imposing glory.
His work involved continuous chiseling, sanding and polishing, as he aimed to uncover that hidden figure.
It took over three years of hard labor.
The result, undoubtedly, is a pinnacle of human achievement.
Tips for Success
Fast-forward five centuries.
What came to be known as The Michelangelo Effect is incredibly insightful and highly relevant to our lives, work, learning, and achievement today and in the future.
First, it’s relevant to how we approach and manage our own talent, what we seek to do with our lives, what we learn and what we study, and how we grow and achieve our true potential.
Second, it’s relevant to how we approach and manage the talent of others, in particular, how we enable them to aim high, learn and develop, achieve their true potential, and lead lives well lived.
Let’s go a bit deeper.
1. You’ve Got to Uncover and Unleash Your Inner David
Data show you are a genius who’s waiting to be discovered. (We recommend this link, have a look for an eye-opening visual.)
In fact, everyone is.
Genius is the unique constellation of strengths — a unique set of sweet spots — that gives you a unique power and an achievement advantage.
You might be a genius in leading people, in teaching and communicating, in creating new products, or in developing the most compelling copy.

Genius is a special asset (it’s the most valuable one, actually); and it underscores your potential for extraordinary achievement.
But your genius is hidden — and, therefore, you’re not using it to your advantage.
Find and reveal your own hidden genius — your unique set of sweet spots — because, scientifically, it’s there.
But don’t stop there.

Achievement’s Past
The Renaissance saw human achievement reach new heights.
Michelangelo’s David is but one example.
The new frontier of human achievement included achievements in arts and architecture, in the sciences, in language and poetry, and in many additional domains.
This historical watershed went far beyond Florence; it shaped life, health, economics, and the course of history over the last 500 years in meaningful and profound ways.
Achievement’s Future
Back then, only the fortunate ones had the privilege to achieve their potential. It was about knowing the right people and rich families of the day.
But one of the most amazing things about mobile apps and the Internet is their rebellious power: the ability to remove barriers and enable everyone, anywhere to find, unleash, and realize their true hidden potential.
